Fluoride Treatment Milwaukie OR

A patient being prepped for Fluoride Treatment in Milwaukie ORHere at Michael Regan, DMD Family, Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry in Milwaukie, OR we want all of our patients to have a reason to smile. We also understand that oral health issues arise at the most inopportune times, which is why we need to give our patients a way to protect their teeth even when the going gets tough. Professional fluoride treatments give our patients a way to protect their teeth from harmful bacteria build-up even when they forget to brush and floss for one or two days in a row! What is fluoride? How does it help teeth? Who needs a professional fluoride treatment? Let us answer all of these questions for you!

What is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally and does wonders for your oral health. Fluoride is found in low concentrations in almost all of the water on earth.

What is Enamel?

Enamel is the outermost layer of your tooth, which gives your tooth it’s white appearance and what protects your teeth from decay. Enamel is extremely hard and does a great job of helping to give your teeth the rigid structure they need to chew your food. Enamel does not regenerate. Instead, you have a certain amount of enamel, and it wears away over time. It takes many years for the enamel to wear away and as it does more and more of the yellow dentin will show on your teeth. Dentin is the layer of the tooth below the thin outer layer of enamel.

What is the Relationship Between Enamel and Fluoride?

Fluoride does a fabulous job of strengthening the enamel on your teeth in much the same way calcium helps to strengthen your bones. By using oral hygiene products that are enriched with fluoride, you can dramatically increase the strength and longevity of the enamel on your teeth. Many dental hygiene products have fluoride in them today, making it easy to regularly treat your teeth to a healthy daily dose. We also provide fluoride to our patients who would like an extra leg-up in the preventive dentistry arena.

Who Needs Fluoride Treatment?

There is a misconception that only kids can benefit from fluoride treatments when that isn’t true at all – anyone who still has their natural teeth can stand to benefit from fluoride treatments. Adults and children alike need their teeth to stay healthy and strong to help them chew and speak.

Who Stands to Benefit the Most From Fluoride Treatments?

Those who stand to benefit the most from fluoride treatments are those who rely on untreated well-water and children who have yet to understand the value of brushing and flossing on a regular basis. Most cities and towns in the US treat their water with small concentrations of fluoride which goes a long way to help keep the teeth of the population healthy. If you rely on untreated well-water, there is probably not enough fluoride present in that water to benefit your oral health very much.

The other subsection of the population who can benefit greatly from fluoride treatments are children who cannot be counted on to brush and floss their teeth on their own yet. Little kids love sweets and don’t have the best track record when it comes to their oral health responsibilities. Fluoride treatments can help to protect their teeth during this time.
